As part of the Members’ Evening on November 21, we had the opportunity to see at close hand some of the costumes worn by Garland Kings in the late nineteenth & early twentieth centuries. One costume, recently acquired from Sheffield Heritage Museum, dates from about 1897 and an impromptu modelling by Kay made sure we had the full effect. Another costume on display was a coachman’s coat covered in ribbons and rosettes which were added each year by the villagers. After research by CHS, this has been identified as the oldest costume worn by the Garland King.
